Actor Johnny Depp was born John Christopher Edward Depp Jr. on June 9, 1963, in Hollywood, California. He began acting professionally in 1989, starring in several films such as Cry-Baby, 21 Grams, Fearless, Finding Forrester, Blow, Sleepy Hollow, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Alice in Wonderland, Black Mass, Transcendence, Mortdecai, Secret Window, and Dark Shadows. In addition to his film career, he has starred in many television programs including Donnie Brasco, 21 Jump Street, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, House M.D., The Lone Ranger, The Invisible Man, and Boardwalk Empire. His most recent movie release was 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge.

Early life

Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963. He was raised in nearby Paris, Kentucky, where his father worked as a truck driver for the railroad. Depp grew up listening to blues music and learned how to play guitar while watching his parents’ record collection. In high school, he played drums in several bands including one called “The Wailers,” whose members included future actor Johnny Depp. After graduating from high school, Depp moved to Los Angeles, California. There, he joined the band the Blackhearts, later renamed the Tubes.

Career

Ronald Reagan was president during some of Johnny Depp’s most formative years — and it seems like he’s still paying off the debt. Before his acting career took off, Depp worked as a busboy, janitor, waiter, and dishwasher to pay the bills while playing guitar in local bands. He eventually landed gigs on TV shows such as “Charlie’s Angels,” “21 Jump Street,” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” In 1989, Depp got his big break when he joined the cast of the hit comedy movie “21 Jump Street.” His character, undercover cop Jenko, became one of the film’s breakout stars.

Depp followed “Jump Street” with another successful role in 1990’s “City Slickers II: The Legend Of Curly’s Gold” and went on to star in several films including 1995’s cult classic “Edward Scissorhands.” But despite his success, Depp didn’t stop working. 1990–2002: Independent films and first collaborations with Tim Burton

Depp had no film releases for two years, except a short appearance in 1991’s, the sixth installment in the franchise. He didn’t make another movie for almost four years, until 1994, when he played Johnny Napalm in, a biopic about one of Hollywood’s worst filmmakers.

In 1995, Depp returned to Burton’s world with, a comedy-drama about a group of friends who go undercover to infiltrate a biker gang.

The following year, Depp starred alongside Johnny Depp, Vanessa Paradis, Christopher Walken, Whoopi Goldberg, and Winona Ryder in, a dark fantasy drama about a young man who must choose between love and magic.

Depp’s final collaboration with Burton came in 1997, when he portrayed Edward Scissorhands, a mute, half-human, half-machine, in a musical adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.

Legal issues

Depp v News Group Newspresents Ltd

In April 2018, Depp sued the British tabloid newspaper Daily Mail over allegations it published defamatory stories about him in October 2017. He claimed that the articles contained false statements about his personal life, including claims he did not pay child support to ex-wife Amber Heard, and that he had been involved in domestic violence incidents.

The court ruled in favor of Depp, awarding him £50,000 ($62,500) in damages. However, the judgment was later overturned on appeal, with the Court of Appeal ruling that there was no evidence that the article was “motivated by malice”. As a result, the case was dismissed.

Depp v Heard

On January 27, 2020, Depp filed a lawsuit against Heard in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. On February 4, 2020, Heard counter-claimed for breach of contract and fraud, claiming that Depp failed to fulfill his contractual obligations regarding the film Fantastic Beasts 3. She alleged that Depp breached the terms of their prenuptial agreement by failing to produce the movie within six months of completing filming on Fantastic Beasts 2.

Heard further asserted that Depp attempted to renegotiate the terms of their prenup in December 2016, shortly after filing for divorce, and that she refused to sign the revised document because she believed it was unfair. She also accused Depp of intentionally sabotaging the production of Fantastic Beasts 3. Heard requested compensatory damages and punitive damages totaling $1 billion.

Depp v. Heard divorce case

The Depp-Heard court battle began in May 2017, when Amber Heard filed a $50 million defamation suit against Johnny Depp. The couple met while working together on the film 21 Hours, and later married in 2016. They divorced in 2019.

In early 2018, Heard wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Post titled “I stood up for myself, and now I’m paying the price.” She detailed her experience of being abused by actor John McConaughey, whom she dated in 2006. She alleged that Depp knew about the abuse, and did nothing to stop it. She further claimed that his actions led to her suffering depression and anxiety.

She stated that she was inspired to write the article because she wanted to help others who are victims of domestic abuse. After publication, she received death threats and was inundated with negative reviews. She also lost several acting jobs due to the incident.

On January 7, 2019, Depp filed a counterclaim against Heard for libel and slander, claiming that her statement harmed him personally and professionally. He cited numerous instances where he was falsely portrayed on social media and in the press, including claims that he assaulted his ex-wife Vanessa Paradis, who he never even met.

After months of pre-trial motions, the case went to trial on April 11, 2020. On June 1, 2020, the jury returned a unanimous verdict in favor of Depp, awarding him $7 million in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages. The jury awarded no money to Heard.

Jury awards $15 million to Johnny Depp

The jury found that Heard defamed Depp by accusing him of domestic violence and child abuse. In addition to awarding Depp $15 million in compensatory damages, the jurors also assessed $5 million in punitive damage.

Depp filed the lawsuit in May 2017, alleging that Heard had falsely accused him of beating her during their marriage. He sued for libel per se, slander per se, false light invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent infliction of emotional distress and breach of contract.

In response to the verdict, Depp’s lawyer, Mark Baute, told reporters outside court that he plans to appeal the decision. “This case was about the truth,” he said. “And we are confident that the truth will prevail.”

Other legal issues of Johnny Depp

Depp was arrested in Vancouver on Thursday for assaulting a security guard while trying to enter his hotel room following a late night out. He was also arrested in NYC in 1994 for causing $10,000 worth of damage to his room at the Plaza Hotel.

In 2012, UC Irvine medical profesor Robin Eckert sued Deppe and three security companies, claiming to have been assaulted by his bodyguards during a concert in LA in 2011. She claimed he had hired her security team to protect her, but they attacked her without provocation.

During the incident, she was handcuffed and dragged 40ft across the floor, resultingin injuries including a dislocated arm. His lawyers argued that Eckert had consented to the alleged assault and battery because she provoked it.

The judge dismissed the case against Depp in August 2016, saying there wasn’t enough evidence to prove he was responsible for the alleged assault.

Alcohol and drug use

In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Johnny Depp admitted that he suffered from alcoholism and substance abuse throughout most of his adult life. Depp claimed that he began drinking at the age of 11 and took his mother’s “nervelessness pills,” later discovering marijuana and cocaine. By the age of 14, he was smoking cigarettes and experimenting with LSD. When asked about his drug use, Depp revealed that he had been addicted to heroin since the 1980s.

Depp claims that he stopped using drugs and alcohol while working on Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007). However, he resumed abusing substances once he finished production on the film. During his marriage to actress/model Amber Heard, Depp became increasingly paranoid and violent towards her. This led to him being charged with domestic battery and assault. His wife filed divorce papers in May 2017.
