President Barack Obama won his second term in office Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney. He received 50.9% of the vote compared to 47.2% for Mr. Romney.

Obama became the 44th president of the United States of Americana. He succeeds George W. Bush, who served two terms.

The election marks President Obama’s third presidential victory. In 2008 he defeated former Senator Hillary Clinton of New York and Arizona Governor Mike Huckabee.

In 2012, Obama faced off against Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

The Chicago years

Who were Barack Obama’s parents?

Barack Obama was born August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the son of Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr., both graduates of Princeton University. His father was a Kenyan economist; his mother grew up in Kansas and met him while she was studying sociology at Harvard. Her family had moved to Kenya in 1952, where her father worked as a civil servant. She returned to the United States in 1956 to study at Radcliffe College, graduating in 1959. In 1962 she married Stanley Armour Dunham, a fellow student at Columbia University. After graduation, she taught English in New York City public schools. They divorced in 1964.

Barack Obama, Sr., was born in 1942 in Nyang’oma Kogelo, Kenya, where his parents had moved to escape the Mau Mau uprising. His father, Barack Obama, Jr., was born in Mombasa, Kenya, and came to America in 1961 to attend Harvard Law School. He returned to Kenya in 1964 to practice law.

Ann Dunham, born in 1936, grew up in Wichita, Kansas; El Paso, Texas; and Seattle, Washington. She attended public schools there, graduating from high school in 1958. Her family lived in Seattle from 1959 to 1962.

After graduating from Harvard Law School, Obama worked as a lawyer at Sidley Austin, where he met Michelle Robinson, a fellow attorney.
