Apple Pay: How to pay with iPhone & Co.

Apple Pay has also been available in Germany for some time. But how does paying by iPhone work? We show you how to set up and use Apple Pay on iPhone, Apple Watch and Co.

Set up Apple Pay on iPhone

To use Apple Pay, you must first add a credit card supported by Apple Pay to Wallet. When opening Wallet on the iPhone, a reference to Apple Pay should already appear. Either tap on “Add” there or on the plus symbol at the top right.

From the list of suggestions, tap the card or provider you want, or select Add another card. Now you can scan your credit card or enter the data manually. After entering the security code, the card will be verified with your provider. After that, you can use Apple Pay. For a list of current Apple Pay partners and more information, visit Apple’s support page .

Set up Apple Pay on Apple Watch, iPad and Mac

Alternatively, you can also add a credit card for Apple Pay under Settings -> Wallet & Apple Pay. Further settings are also possible there. You can disable double-clicking on the side button there, allow payments on the Mac or store a shipping address. Allow Mac or enter a shipping address.

To activate Apple Pay on the iPad or a Macbook with Touch ID, you can also use the settings. To use Apple Pay on the Apple Watch, you must add the credit card through the Watch app. Go to “My Watch” and the menu item “Wallet & Apple Pay”. The further procedure works as described above.

Reading tip: Disable in-app purchases

Apple Watch 3 and later and iPhone 8 and later devices can store up to twelve maps. On older devices you can save up to eight maps. Apple promises that no credit card data will be stored on the device or on Apple servers. Instead, Apple Pay uses a device-specific number and a unique transaction number, according to Apple.

Pay in store with Apple Pay

You can use Apple Pay to pay at any credit card terminal that shows either an Apple Pay sticker or the contactless payment symbol. This should make it possible to pay with Apple Pay in all places where contactless payment with a credit card was previously possible.

  • For iPhones with Face ID , double-press the side (power) button. The credit card stored as the standard card is then displayed on the screen. You can tap on it to choose another card. Glance at your iPhone to authorize payment with Face ID. Then hold iPhone near the reader until the display shows Done and a check mark.
  • For iPhones with Touch ID , place your finger on the sensor and hold the iPhone near the terminal until “Done” and a checkmark appear on the screen. To pay with a non-default card, hold iPhone to the terminal without placing your finger on the Touch ID sensor, then select a different card. Only then do you confirm the payment with your fingerprint.
  • On the Apple Watch , double-press the side button below the crown. You can swipe left and right to select the card you want. Hold the Apple Watch display close to the terminal until you feel a tap on your wrist. You may then have to sign a receipt or enter your PIN.

Pay with Apple Pay in apps and on websites

On iPhone or iPad, you can use Apple Pay to pay in participating apps. To do this, tap the Apple Pay button or select Apple Pay as the payment method. Billing, shipping or contact information is stored in Apple Pay so you don’t have to re-enter it next time. Confirm the payment with Face ID or Touch ID or your unlock code. On Mac models without Touch ID, you’ll need an iPhone or Apple Watch to confirm the payment. Bluetooth must be enabled on the Mac and all devices must be signed in with the same Apple ID. After completing your purchase in Safari on Mac, confirm the payment on iPhone or Apple Watch. You must have previously authorized the payment via Mac on the iPhone under Settings -> Wallet & Apple Pay.
